1. W5- Sustainable architecture Sydney – Anderson
When reading this article, as an architecture
student I found his design options very clever and simple in providing a great
home full of sustainable ideas. Anderson Architecture has won the Sustainable
Building award for the Inner West. They achieved this award because of their
excellent design decisions despite the building being a Federation house in
Annandale.
The design plays around the idea of the
Cubism, Gabrielle
Pelletier, senior associate architect says “the home is now referred to as “the
cube”, after its squared-off plan and window seats that look onto the lush
surrounds outside” The outside concrete pool is heated by solar panels
positioned on the roof, and the double glazed windows and passive solar design
has allowed the building to be less reliant on the electricity. Not only has
the design for allows for a flow of air through the building in the hotter
months but has also reduced their financial costs.
The design of kitchen with a sky light allowing natural
light and as well as all the other internal spaces, has utilised all aspects of
passive design. I believe that to achieve sustainability especially in homes it
is through architectural design. Especially in Australia passive design should
allows be considered and designed into homes. All these architectural elements
have improved the buildings performance and made the homeowners very happy.
